How to Compost Your Used Coffee Grounds

Rather than throwing your gourmet coffee grinds into the garbage, why not add them to your compost? If you don’t compost already – why not give it a try?

It’s quite simple and the benefits are plentiful. Composting improves your soil structure, helps stop contaminants from reaching our water sources, reduces the needs for pesticides … and the list goes on. There are plenty of resources out there that describe the benefits in much better detail than we can, so check them out.

For now, know that composting is good and let us help you incorporate coffee grounds into your composting habits.

If you are starting composting from scratch, the beginning steps are choosing a container, placing it in a convenient shady location and layering it with green (scraps from the kitchen and coffee grounds) and brown (leaves, twigs, yard debris). After that, sit back and watch the container work its composting magic.

The coffee grounds you add contain as much Nitrogen as grass clippings and help to keep your compost composting.

But coffee grounds work in more ways than just supplying high levels of Nitrogen for your compost. They also act as a deterrent to those furry critters. Bury the kitchen scraps in a deep pile of coffee grounds to prevent the food from attracting the critters in the first place. Did you just add something colorful to the compost such as lemons? Coffee grounds will take care of that right away without anyone being the wiser.

If you find that you don’t drink enough coffee to add to your compost, many local coffee shops can help by giving you their used coffee grounds. Offer to supply the containers and be reliable in picking them up on time. Time to get composting!
