What is a Peaberry Coffee Bean?

| |

Peaberry coffee beans are a particular type of coffee bean that develop as a single seed inside the coffee cherry compared to regular coffee beans that develop two seeds.

Normally, the two seeds press up against each other as they grow creating a flat side to the finished bean. Peaberry coffee beans mature into round beans since there is less space constraints inside the cherry. The round bean is often pea-shaped – thus it’s name!

The term peaberry is usually used to name coffee from Tanzania, Africa.  Tanzanian Peaberry coffee beans are quite popular. However, peaberry composes about 5% of total coffee bean production and is also a variety of Kona coffee.
