Frequently Asked Questions

Green coffee beans offer total control over your roast and flavor profile, but they also raise unique questions. Here’s what you need to know before you start roasting.

Green coffee beans are raw, unroasted coffee beans that have been harvested, processed, and dried but not yet roasted. They’re the natural state of the coffee bean before heat transforms them into the brown, aromatic beans we grind and brew.

Key Traits of Green Coffee Beans:

  • Appearance: Pale green to bluish, hard, and dry
  • Purpose: Used for home or commercial roasting to customize flavor and freshness
  • Shelf Life: Longer than roasted beans—often 6 to 12+ months if stored properly
  • Flavor: Neutral and grassy when unroasted; flavor is developed through the roasting process
  • Other Uses: Occasionally used for green coffee extract, a supplement touted for its antioxidant content

Green coffee beans offer full control over the roast level and flavor profile, making them ideal for DIY roasters and specialty coffee enthusiasts.

1. Choose Your Roasting Method:

  • Home Coffee Roaster – Best control and consistency
  • Air Popcorn Popper – A popular DIY method (use with caution)
  • Stovetop Skillet or Oven – Manual methods, harder to control
  • Drum Roaster (Commercial) – For advanced or larger-scale roasting

2. Heat the Beans:

  • Preheat your roaster or pan to around 370°F to 540°F.
  • Add green beans in a single layer and begin roasting.

3. Listen for the “Cracks”:

  • First Crack (light roast): Beans expand and pop like popcorn (~385°F).
  • Second Crack (dark roast): A quieter, more subtle crack (~435°F).

4. Watch Color and Smell:

  • Light roast: tan to medium brown, high acidity
  • Medium roast: balanced brown, caramelized aroma
  • Dark roast: rich brown to nearly black, oily surface

5. Cool Immediately:

  • Transfer roasted beans to a colander or baking sheet to cool and stop roasting.

6. Rest Before Brewing:

Let beans rest 12–24 hours to release carbon dioxide before grinding and brewing.

Green beans are shelf-stable for up to a year or more when stored properly in a cool, dry, airtight container. However, they’re best used within 6–12 months for peak flavor when roasted.

Not traditionally. Unroasted beans are dense, flavorless, and very difficult to grind. However, some people steep ground green beans in water to make green coffee extract for health purposes — but this is different from regular brewed coffee.

Often, yes, but it is not a significant difference in cost. Green beans typically cost less per pound than roasted ones and allow for bulk purchases. Plus, roasting at home can reduce long-term costs if you drink coffee regularly.

Yes! We offer green coffee in a variety of sizes, including 1 lb bags to 5+ lb wholesale options for home and commercial roasters.
