While many people cannot fathom the thought of getting up and not starting the day without coffee.  They also don’t think about everything that went into that coffee.  From the farmers that grow it to shipping and importing, processing, and getting it out on the shelves.  There is a lot that goes into that one cup of morning coffee.  However, there are lots of other things that we don’t think about when we are sipping our delicious beverage.  Let’s take a look at some coffee statistics that will get you thinking.

1-America’s consumption

Let’s take a look at the consumption of this yummy beverage.  Did you know that 64% of Americans drink coffee everyday?  Out of them, they drink 3.1 cups, which is slightly lower than the recommended dosage of caffeine from the FDA.  In fact, 75% of the caffeine that Americans consume is from coffee.  This equals out to about 146 billion cups a year.  That’s a lot of coffee!  Let’s continue to look at some coffee stats.

2-The cup size changes with the country.

A coffee cup is a coffee cup, or is it?  While the average coffee cup in the US is 9 ounces or friends of the north is only 7.6 ounces.  Japan is often drinking out of a 6.7-ounce cup.  

3-Brewing and home

While there are Starbucks and coffee shops popping up all over the place.  More and more people tend to brew coffee at home as well.  In fact, 79% of the consumption is coming from home, according to studies performed by the National Coffee Association (NCA).  45% brew their coffee in a drip coffee maker, however, the preparation is done the night before.  The second most popular is a single-cup brewing system.  13% of people brewing at home use espresso machines in their homes.  

4-Generations related to coffee

70% of people over the age of 55 drink at least one cup of coffee a day.  However, they are typically sipping on the national brands and aren’t as much interested in the gourmet coffee.  However, the millennials are certainly all about gourmet coffee, at 48% consumption.  They also like their fancier coffee drinks such as lattes, cappuccinos, and the like.  So much so that 36% drink coffee in this form.  While 22% like espresso too.

5-Income and gender seem to matter with coffee consumption.

More women drink coffee than men.   In fact, there are only 62% of women that drink coffee compared to 66% of men.  However, these numbers are very close.  While your income takes in another factor.  66% of those that drink coffee regularly are making more than $30k a year.  

6-Pricing and expenses

While we love our coffee and most of us know it.  This beverage is a bit pricey to drink, on average.  The average American can spend $3.28 on a cup of coffee.  While this doesn’t seem like a lot, given that most drink about 3 cups a day, it can really add up.  In fact, it adds up to about $1100 a year or $14.40 a week on grabbing a cup a joe on your way out.  If you’re thinking about drinking coffee everyday you should educate yourself on buying premium coffee and how to do it right!

7-Coffee is one of the most recognizable smells.

It is up there with vanilla, roses, and peanut butter.  Coffee is actually made into scents for candles and other home decors to make your home smell like coffee on a regular basis.  Coffee is a very pleasant smell for most people and it is a smell they love to wake up to.  It also reminds them of some of their favorite childhood memories as many of us grew up with older generations brewing it.

8-There is a National Day for coffee

Yes, we love coffee so much that we have made a national day for it.  That day is Sept 29th, be prepared and get a cup of your favorite coffee on that day and post a picture to your social media.  Spread the word of what coffee is your favorite, show off your favorite mug, whatever you do, have fun with it!

9-Brazil is the Largest coffee grower

Brazil is the largest coffee grower, however, did you know that there are two US states that have the soil needed to produce coffee?  Yes, that’s right, Hawaii and California have areas that have the lava based soil that coffee needs to thrive.  Also, Vietnam is number two in coffee production followed up by Colombia and Indonesia. 

10. Finland is the top consumer per capita

You probably thought it was the US.  But, in fact, it is the Finns that love their coffee the most.  Next was Norway, Iceland, Denmark, Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Canada, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Austria, Italy, Brazil, Slovenia, Germany, Greece, France, Croatia, Cyprus, Lebanon, Estonia, Spain, Portugal, and finally the United States when the population is added to the equation.
